A matching pair of Japanese iron tsuba decorated with delicate silver inlay depicting trailing wisteria vines and blossoms. The design follows the outer edges of each guard, leaving broad areas of the dark iron surface undecorated and creating an elegant contrast between the aged iron and bright silver.
The wisteria is rendered with finely worked curling vines, leaves, and hanging flower clusters, with portions of the design continuing around the rounded edges of the guards. Both tsuba have an oval form with a central nakago-ana and a single hitsu-ana.
The iron surfaces retain a deep, naturally aged patina with areas of oxidation, wear, and losses to the silver decoration consistent with age. The nakago-ana show evidence of adjustment or fitting from previous mounting.
An attractive and unusual surviving matched pair, particularly appealing for the delicacy of the silver floral decoration against the restrained iron ground.
