This is an antique Japanese Edo era bronze hibachi from the middle 1800's. With birds in relief on the sides. In Japan a hibachi is considered an enclosure for fire, usually hot coals sitting on a bed of ash. Used for heating small spaces, lighting pipe or even heating water or sake.
