Antique Japanese Hand Made Suzuribako Calligraphy Box Raised Bamboo Design
Antique Japanese Hand Made Suzuribako Calligraphy Box Raised Bamboo Design
This is an antique Japanese late Taisho Era (c. 1920) lacquered Suzuribako (calligraphy ink stone box) made of cryptomeria wood with over twenty layers of pumpkin orange and black lacquer. Japanese lacquer from the this era was considered the finest ever made. It is all hand made and has the design of a section of timber bamboo with raised nodule. The interior area is divided into areas for the ink stone, and brushes (see pictures - not included). There is a hole in under where the suzuri (ink stone) would have been placed. This is to aid in removing the ink stone (see picture 7).
Having been in storage for over a century , with exception to some minor signs of past use, this suzuribako remains in very fine condition throughout and is in good polish. Measures 7 1/2" long by 5" wide and 1 1/4" tall (19 x 12.5 x 3.2 cm).
Please note: this listing is for suzuribako only and does not include ink stone and brushes seen in pictures 1, 3, & 10.
