Antique Japanese Imari Porcelain Plate with Mount Fuji and Pine Tree 11"
Japan, late Edo period c1850's
Hand-painted underglaze blue on porcelain
Diameter: 11" (28 cm)
This antique Japanese Imari porcelain plate features a classic landscape composition centered on Mount Fuji, rendered in fine linear brushwork and tonal washes of cobalt blue. In the foreground, a windswept pine tree anchors the scene, its layered foliage contrasting with the vertical striations used to define the mountain’s slopes. A stylized cloud band and cracked-ice style ground pattern frame the composition, creating depth and visual rhythm.
The plate has a softly scalloped rim and a pale bluish-white glaze characteristic of Imari ware. The reverse shows a plain glazed foot with kiln marks and firing grit consistent with period production. The painting style, subject matter, and form align with Japanese export and domestic Imari wares produced from the late Edo into early Meiji era.
Mount Fuji imagery symbolizes permanence, stability, and auspicious fortune in Japanese visual culture, while the pine tree represents longevity and resilience, making this a harmonious and enduring decorative motif.
Condition: Good antique condition with expected glaze wear, minor firing imperfections, and surface age consistent with use and age. No cracks or repairs observed.
