Antique Japanese Imari porcelain bowl with scalloped rim and hand-painted decoration

Japan, late Edo period (circa 1800–1868)
Dimensions: 6.25″W × 6.25″D × 1.5″H (16 × 16 × 4 cm)

This antique Japanese porcelain bowl is formed with a softly scalloped rim and shallow profile, typical of late Edo period Imari tableware. The body is finely potted and finished in a clear glaze over a white porcelain ground, with underglaze cobalt decoration applied by hand. The scalloping adds both visual rhythm and tactile interest, elevating the piece beyond purely utilitarian ware.

The decoration features classical sometsuke (染付) brushwork arranged to follow the contours of the bowl, creating a balanced composition. Such designs were favored for serving dishes and small shared bowls, where visual harmony complemented seasonal food presentation. The restrained blue-and-white palette reflects Edo aesthetic preferences for clarity, rhythm, and understated elegance.

During the late Edo period, Imari porcelain was widely produced for domestic use, with forms like this bridging everyday dining and more formal table settings. Scalloped rims in particular echo earlier Chinese influences while being fully absorbed into Japanese ceramics. These bowls were commonly used for side dishes, sweets, or small portions served alongside rice and soup, aligning with the modular structure of Japanese meals.

Collectors value Edo Imari bowls of this type for their honest functionality, confident handwork, and enduring design. The combination of a refined scalloped form and freehand cobalt painting makes this piece both historically grounded and visually versatile.

Condition: Antique condition with expected kiln specks, light glaze variation, and minor wear to the foot rim consistent with age and use. No cracks or repairs observed.

A refined and authentic example of late Edo Imari porcelain, well suited for display, collection, or thoughtful integration into a Japanese ceramics grouping.
