Antique Japanese Imari bowl richly decorated in enamel and gold, late Edo to early Meiji period

Japan, late Edo to early Meiji period (circa 1850–1880)
Dimensions: 4 3/4"W x 2.5"H (12 x 6.4 cm)
Weight: 8.2 oz

A finely hand-painted Japanese Imari bowl from the transitional late Edo to early Meiji era, featuring vivid overglaze enamels in red, green, and cobalt blue accented with gilt details. The exterior decoration is arranged in alternating panels of lush botanical sprays and stylized crest-like roundels, framed by cobalt grounds overlaid with intersecting gold lines. This layered use of color and gilt reflects the exuberant aesthetic of the period as kilns moved from feudal patronage to wider commercial markets.

Subtle kiln artifacts visible in the glaze—such as surface pinholing, textural undulation, and pooled glazing around the foot—suggest firing in a traditional wood-burning climbing kiln (登り窯 noborigama), common in the mid-19th century prior to widespread modernization of production. These features add authenticity and character, reinforcing the handmade nature of the piece.

The foot is neatly trimmed with expected wear consistent with age, and the interior is finished with a soft celadon-tinted glaze that contrasts beautifully with the richly decorated exterior.

A graceful and well-preserved example suitable for collectors of Edo/Meiji Imari, for display, or expressive table use.

Excellent antique condition with gentle gilt wear appropriate to period.
