Antique Japanese Tsuba Signed Ittan (一反) with Dragonfly and Gold Inlay
Japan, Edo period (17th–18th century)

This fine Edo-period iron tsuba combines simple form with striking decoration. The plate, carved in a rounded mokkō-gata outline, is enhanced with radiating lines that catch the light across the surface. A large dragonfly in gilt inlay dominates one side, its body and wings carefully chased to suggest texture and movement. On the lower section, two gilt-outlined rings balance the composition.

The dragonfly (tonbo) was a cherished motif in samurai art, known as the “victory insect” (kachimushi), since it was believed to never retreat when flying. Its presence on a sword guard symbolized courage, forward momentum, and success in battle. The paired rings may represent family crests, or may serve as abstract symbols of continuity and harmony.

The rim is finely worked with a rope-like carving, adding tactile refinement. On the reverse, the same motifs are echoed, emphasizing balance. The signature carved on the plate reads Ittan (一反), a name element used by fittings makers during the Edo period.

Condition: Well-preserved with attractive patina. The iron shows natural age with darkened surface, while the gilt inlay retains its brilliance.
