This is a Japanese kachō-ga (bird-and-flower) painting in ink and mineral color on silk, depicting a flowering cherry (sakura) branch in full bloom. The white five-petaled blossoms and unopened buds are drawn with fine red curling stems and calyxes, set against soft, atmospheric leaves in muted sage and olive tones. The artist's signature and a red seal appear at lower left; the signature has not been confidently deciphered.

The fine, closely observed brushwork on silk, gauzy color built up in thin layers, sits within the naturalist Maruyama-Shijō tradition that shaped so much Meiji-era kachō-ga. Cherry blossom is among the most resonant motifs in Japanese art, prized for its brief, luminous bloom and its long association with the turning of the seasons.
