Antique Japanese Kanzashi Hairpin – Carved Chrysanthemum and Leaf Motif in Amber Celluloid – 6½"
Graceful kanzashi (簪) hair ornament from the late Meiji to Taishō period, crafted in warm amber-toned celluloid and carved with an openwork kiku (菊, chrysanthemum) framed by gently curving leaves. The circular composition and slender, tapering prongs recall the refined style of the early 20th century, when traditional symbols of longevity and beauty were rendered in the new, lightweight materials of the modern age.
The chrysanthemum—Japan’s imperial flower—embodies endurance and purity, and was among the most favored motifs in women’s adornment during the late 19th century. This piece’s translucent tone and delicate modeling catch the light beautifully, offering a sense of quiet luxury and timeless craftsmanship.
An elegant accessory bridging the artistry of Edo-era design and the emerging modern sensibilities of Meiji and Taishō Japan.
