Antique Japanese Kogai (笄) Hairpin — Bamboo & Maki-e Chrysanthemum, c.1850–1900
Bring authentic Edo–Meiji elegance to a collection or outfit with this classic two-part kogai. The bamboo core is finished in deep black urushi lacquer; each end is capped with an amber-toned translucent segment decorated in delicate maki-e featuring chrysanthemum (菊, kiku) sprays—an auspicious motif for longevity and autumn beauty. As customary, one half has the male tang that passes through the coiffure; the opposite half is a hollow cap that fits on from the far side, giving the hair a perfectly symmetrical bar presentation across the bun.
