Antique Japanese Blue and White Scenic Porcelain Plate 8.5"W
Late Meiji to Taisho Period, early 1900s.
Dimensions: 8.5"W.
Octagonal-form porcelain plate decorated in underglaze cobalt blue with a continuous river landscape scene featuring mountains, bridges, pavilions, and figures in a classical Chinese-inspired setting. The cavetto is framed by a repeating geometric key-fret border with stylized floral medallions at the lobed rim. The composition shows confident brushwork with layered washes creating depth and atmospheric perspective.
The reverse is finished with a recessed foot ring and painted floral sprays around the rim. Centered within the foot is a circular underglaze blue mark consistent with early 20th century Japanese export wares. The porcelain body has a soft white tone with light kiln grit and age-appropriate surface wear visible to the foot ring and glaze.
A well-balanced decorative plate suitable for display, representing the continued influence of Chinese literati landscapes on Japanese porcelain production in the early 1900s.
