Antique Japanese Menuki Pair – Crows on Plum Blossom Branches
Japan, Edo period (18th–19th century)

This pair of Edo-period menuki features a striking composition of crows poised among blooming plum branches. The blossoms are highlighted in gilt, standing out against the deep patina of the shakudō ground. The birds are rendered with careful attention to feather texture and posture, their dark forms harmonizing with the luminous flowers.

Plum blossoms (ume) were a favorite motif in Japanese art, symbolizing resilience in hardship, as they bloom in the cold of early spring. Crows (karasu) carried varied meanings: watchfulness, cleverness, and even divine messengers, particularly linked to guidance and protection. Together, they form an evocative pairing, balancing stark presence with seasonal renewal.

Menuki such as these were mounted beneath the hilt wrapping (tsuka-ito) of a samurai’s sword, where they provided both tactile grip and symbolic resonance. This set would have been felt by the warrior’s hand, a reminder of natural cycles and the wisdom of watchfulness.

Condition: Patina consistent with age, with light wear and scattered loss of gilding. Relief carving remains sharp, with strong contrast between the blossoms and the dark alloy of the birds.
