Antique Japanese Sumida Gawa Tall Ribbed Red Vase with Two Children, Unknown Artist (c. 1890–1920)

A tall Sumida Gawa vase with two high-relief child figures, one offering a green basket of small round objects while the other reaches up toward it. The ribbed body is finished in a rich iron-red glaze with bold black and cream drip glaze flowing from the flared rim.

Sumida Gawa pottery, originating from the Sumida River district in Tokyo, is celebrated for its sculptural, high-relief decoration and vivid color contrasts. Produced primarily for export during the late Meiji and Taisho periods, these works often depict playful or humorous scenes in three-dimensional detail. This example bears a porcelain plaque on the reverse with a blue underglaze inscription identifying an artist from the Sumida Gawa workshop, though the exact maker remains unknown.
