Antique Japanese Meiji Era (c 1870's) Five Drawer Tansu Chest/Desk Sugi Wood 36"
Dating to the early Meiji era c 1970's, this is a special antique Japanese five drawer scholars desk (with one more secret drawer!) made of Sugi (Japanese cedar) wood face and casing. This type of bench like tansu was known as a tsukue (desk) and held writing materials and it was a perfect size to act as a desk sitting on the tatami floor. The method of construction (wooden pin) as well as all the hand forged handles with exception of minor signs of past use and a nice warm aged century old patina, this chest remains in great antique condition. The drawer opens and closes with ease.
