This is an antique (c. 1880) Meiji era Japanese lidded lacquer soup / rice bowl. It is all hand turned cryptomeria wood with over 20 thin coats of Japanese urushi dark brown lacquer exterior and red lacquer interior with makie (raised gold) art work in the form of a farm house with plum blossoms and a bird and plum blossoms. The lid fits nicely on the bowl.
Having been in storage for over a century, with exception to very minor signs of past use this lidded bowl remains in good polish and in fine condition. It measures 4 1/2" in diameter by 3 1/2" tall (11.5 x 9 cm).
