This is an antique black lacquer lidded soup bowl. It was hand turned from cryptomeria wood with over twenty layers lacquer. Japanese lacquer is considered the finest in the world. This type of bowl was often used for miso soup or white rice. There is a raised gold design (makie) of pine, bamboo, and plum blossom on the lid (sho-chiku-bai). Shochikubai are three elements of happiness and longevity. Having been in storage for over a century, with exception to minor signs of use, this bowl remains in fine condition are in good polish. Measures 3 1/2" in diameter by 3 1/4" tall with lid (9 x 8 cm). There are 4 more identical soup bowls available upon request.
