This is an antique Japanese mid Meiji Era (c. 1900) hand carved marble stamp known as an inkan. In Japan and China one does not sign, but rather stamp ones name with a chop or inkan like this one.
This stone has an unusual etched name of the owner on the side (see pictures 7 & 8).
This marble stamp is made of a very hard durable igneous stone and measures by 1" square by 2" tall (2.5 x 5 cm). With exception of ink stains and minor signs of past use, it remains in very fine condition. Has a very clear, distinctive stamped impression.
