This is an antique Japanese mid Meiji Era (c. 1900) Kasaneju (stacking box). It would have been used for very special occasions to serve food for a new year (osechi). There are two boxes that can stack with one lid (see pictures).
Each box was hand crafted from kiln dried cryptomeria wood with over 20 coats of Japanese black and red lacqueron the interiors and bottom. The exterior has a honey brown natural lacquer (kijiro) finish. Each box measures 8" x 8 1/2" x 2 3/4" tall (20.3 x 21.5 x 7 cm). Together they stack (with lid) up to 6" tall (15 cm). With exception of minor loss of lacquer and wear on the bottom (see picture 11), it remains in good condition. A very elegant and functional piece of art to display your treasures or to serve something special.
