Antique Japanese Meiji Era (C. 1910) Hakari Tenbin Balance Scale Forged Iron
Antique Japanese Meiji Era (C. 1910) Hakari Tenbin Balance Scale Forged Iron
This is an antique Japanese balance scale (hakari) dating to the late Meiji Era (c. 1910). It has silver dots inset on both sides used to measure while a weight is slid down the shaft to determine an exact weight. The shaft is made of Japanese red oak. It still has its 100+ year old patina. There is a forged iron hook at the end and two rings where leather straps are attached set on opposite sides for hanging the scale. Seen in the last picture is a weight (not included) similar to the one which would have originally been used to slide up and down this scale.
Having been in storage over 100 years, with exception to some oxidation on iron parts and a nice warm-aged patina on the long oak shaft, it remains in very good functional condition. This scale measures 25" long (61 cm).
Please note: The weight seen in the last picture is NOT included in this listing but can be seen in a current or upcoming sailerking listing.
