This is an antique Japanese Meiji era (1868-1912) kodansu (personal chest). Used for storing documents, money and other precious items it is made of solid Kiri wood (paulownia) front and case. Kodansu chest were a special piece used to store one's most valued items. Three drawers can be accessed behind the hinged door. Three other drawers are secured behind a "bo" stick that latches but no longer locks.

Height = 18"

Width = 23”

Depth = 12"

This chest was well used and well loved and has a warm aged patina. It remains in fine antique condition and should serve well for another century or more of use. A great piece of Japanese history and an interesting and very solid and functional piece of furniture.

We often have custom iron bases made for tansu such as this to bring it up to your preferred elevation. These take 3-6 week to have made and add around $300 to the over cost. Please inquire for details on order a custom solid iron stand.
