Antique Japanese Meiji Era (c1880’s) Kodansu Personal Tansu 5 Drawer 25"W
This is an antique Japanese Meiji era (1868-1912) kodansu (personal chest). Used for storing documents, money and other precious items it is made throughout of solid Kiri wood (paulownia). Kodansu chest were a special piece used to store one's most valued items. There are four lock plates but the locks have over time become inoperable and no key is necessary and no risk of getting locked out.

This chest was well used and well loved and has a warm aged patina. It remains in fine antique condition and should serve well for another century or more of use. A great piece of Japanese history and an interesting and very solid and functional piece of furniture.
