Antique Japanese Sendai Isho-dansu (衣装箪笥) – Keyaki Chest with Peony-Iron Hardware c.1880

A striking late-Edo to early-Meiji period Sendai isho-dansu (衣装箪笥)—a traditional kimono clothing chest distinguished by its brilliant keyaki (zelkova) wood grain and lavish black-iron hardware. The richly grained keyaki front panels are finished in a warm natural kijiro lacquer, while the sides and interior are crafted from lightweight sugi (cedar).

The facade displays bold hand-forged iron fittings in exuberant botan (peony) motifs, symbols of prosperity and good fortune. A right-side door opens to reveal smaller locking drawers for valuables, while the wide central drawers provide ample kimono storage. Heavy side handles and corner bracing attest to the chest’s portable, durable construction.

Dimensions: 41.75" W × 35.75" H × 17" D
Condition: Excellent antique condition with a rich lacquer sheen and pleasing iron patina, minor wear consistent with age.

This Sendai tansu exemplifies 19th-century Japanese craftsmanship and makes a dramatic yet functional statement piece in a modern home.
