This is an antique Taisho era (c. 1920's) sewing box with an arrangement of three exterior drawers. The lidded top section is divided into three areas. This type of tansu chest was used to store valuables as well as equipment for the person of the house to do repairs on Kimono and bedding.
This haribako has keyaki wood (Japanese elm) exteriors and kiri wood (paulownia) wood drawer interiors. Great skill was used in the workmanship in this chest. It is made with all wooden pin and dovetail construction with beaded wooden surrounds on all drawers.
This chest has been well used yet well loved, with the exception of a few signs of past use, it remains in fine condition throughout. All drawers run smoothly top lidded section swings open and closed with ease. This chest measures 9.75" wide by 5.75" deep by 7" high. Solidly built, a great piece of Japanese history and makes a great jewelry box or a classic desk top organizer today.
