This is an antique Japanese ceramic hibachi likely from the Meiji era (1868-1912). In beautiful cobalt blue glaze it shows four scenes of teachers instructing pupils in various subjects: the strategic game of Go, music, writing and painting. Traditionally in Japan a hibachi is considered an enclosure for fire, usually hot coals sitting on a bed of ash used to help heat small spaces, lite a pipe or warm water for tea.
A great container for plants and flowers
There are several hairlines along the top edge but none seems to affect the structural well being of the piece. Priced according to condition.
