Meiji Kiri Wood Kasane Isho Dansu Kannon Biraki Two-Section Tansu Cabinet 41"H
Japan | Meiji Period, c. 1880s
A substantial two-section kasane isho dansu in 100% kiri (paulownia), configured in the kannon biraki style — double doors opening from a central lock to reveal interior storage — a format named for the outward-swinging doors of Buddhist temple altar cabinets. The upper section presents paired kannon biraki doors with a large circular iron lock plate and characteristic cross-brace hardware; the lower section offers two full-width drawers fitted with Hirute handles. Iron hardware throughout: corner reinforcements, butterfly hinges, and decorative strapwork applied in the bold, graphic manner of Meiji-period ironwork. Kiri construction throughout case, interior, and secondary framing — the preferred wood for isho dansu, valued for its light weight, breathability, and resistance to moisture and insects. A handsome and functional storage cabinet equally at home as a bedroom chest or entryway statement piece.
Dimensions: 37"W × 16.5"D × 41"H (94 × 42 × 104 cm) | Upper section: 20.5"H | Lower section: 20.5"H
