Antique Japanese Meiji Era Kodansu with iron hardware built from solid Japanese cedar

Japan, Meiji period (1868–1912)
Dimensions: 22.5″L × 12.5″W × 22.75″H

This compact kodansu is crafted in solid sugi wood (Japanese cedar) with a warm amber tone and natural grain. The form features three full-width drawers above two lower smaller drawers, all secured with substantial hand-forged iron hardware using three different keys, all included. Large circular escutcheons with central locking posts anchor the façade, complemented by thick corner brackets and traditional side carry handles.

Kodansu were personal storage chests used for documents, valuables, and household items, embodying the functional elegance of sashimono joinery. The bold iron fittings are both protective and decorative, reflecting the Meiji era appreciation for strong geometry and visible craftsmanship. The balance between warm wood and dark iron creates a grounded aesthetic aligned with the Japanese sensibility of 用の美, beauty in utility.

During the Meiji period, regional workshops refined small-scale cabinetry for urban merchants and samurai households adapting to modernization. Pieces such as this bridge late Edo restraint with emerging Meiji confidence, maintaining traditional construction while embracing more assertive hardware design. Its square, architectural stance gives it a sculptural presence beyond mere storage.

Collectors value kodansu of this scale for their versatility—large enough to anchor a space, yet compact enough for modern interiors. The honest surface wear and developed patina enhance its authenticity and tactile appeal.

Condition: Age-appropriate surface wear, scattered scratches, and minor edge wear consistent with use. Iron hardware shows oxidation and stable patina; drawers slide smoothly.

A strong, visually balanced Meiji kodansu with excellent display presence and practical storage. Ideal as a statement accent in entry, study, or layered with ceramics and art.
