Totai Shippo Ceramic Cloisonné Vase / Black Ground Floral
Japan, Meiji–Taishō Period, late 19th–early 20th century
A totai shippo (ceramic-bodied cloisonné) vase in the baluster form, worked on a black ground with pink and white floral sprays and green foliage, a blue scalloped border at the neck, and a blue lotus petal band at the foot. Totai shippo — cloisonné enamel applied to a ceramic rather than metal body — is a technically demanding specialty of Meiji and Taishō-period production, distinguished from standard shippo by its lighter weight and matte ceramic base visible at the unglazed foot.
