Antique Japanese Meiji Era Ozen Obon Black & Gold Lacquer Peony
This is an antique Japanese late Meiji Era (c. 1910) serving tray, and It would have been used to serve tea or small appetizers. It is made of cryptomeria wood with over 20 coats of Japanese dark red lacquer. Painted in gold is a Peony flower with a butterfly accented with red and delicate gold wash for the leaves and petals. It comes with the original mulberry paper wrapper.
Having been used lovingly for over a century, there is a separation on the corner as seen in pictures 10 and 11 it remains in good condition. The tray measures 9 1/2" square by 1 1/4" tall (36 x 3.5 cm). A very elegant and functional piece of art to display your treasures.
