Antique Japanese sugi cedar kyosoku armrest with curved saddle top and shaped trestle legs
Japan | Meiji to Taisho Period, early 20th century
A well-proportioned Japanese kyosoku (脇息) armrest in sugi (Japanese cedar), the gently curved saddle-form top polished to a deep, lacquer-like patina through generations of use. The trestle-style legs are shaped in a waisted baluster profile with pierced oval apertures — a classical kyosoku leg form — each set on a flat rectangular foot, joined by a stretcher below the top. The rich dark reddish-brown surface has developed a deep, even tone characteristic of aged and well-handled sugi, the grain visible beneath the patina. Construction is solid and traditional throughout.
The kyosoku is a quintessentially Japanese form — a low armrest used when seated on the floor in formal or relaxed posture, supporting the elbow and forearm while reading, conversing, or resting. A standard furnishing of the traditional Japanese interior from the Heian period onward, kyosoku appear regularly in classical painting and literature as markers of cultivated domestic life. Fine examples with developed patina are increasingly collected as objects of quiet beauty independent of their original function.
Dimensions: 22"L × 6"W × 10.5"H (56 × 15 × 27 cm) Condition: Very good. Deep natural patina consistent with age and use. Minor surface wear and checking consistent with sugi. Structurally sound.
