Meiji Kiri Wood Kasane Isho Dansu Two-Section Tansu Chest of Drawers 37.5"H Japan | Meiji Period, c. 1880s–1900s
A clean and well-proportioned two-section kasane isho dansu constructed entirely in kiri (paulownia), the traditional wood of choice for clothing storage in the Japanese household. Each section carries two full-width drawers fitted with Warabite pulls on large circular Kakute backplates — a classic Meiji hardware pairing that balances utility with quiet formality. Iron corner reinforcements at case edges. The warm, honey-toned kiri surfaces show an honest patina consistent with age, with no heavy restoration. Kiri's natural properties — exceptional lightness, low thermal conductivity, and resistance to moisture and insects — made it the standard for isho dansu intended to protect silk kimono and fine textiles. A versatile and livable piece that works equally well as a bedroom chest or living room accent.
