Antique Japanese Meiji Period Blue & White Porcelain Landscape Plate
Japan, Meiji period, late 19th century.
Diameter: 11"
Hand-painted blue and white porcelain plate depicting a classical Japanese mountain landscape with tiled-roof farmhouse, pine trees, layered hills, and distant peaks rendered in fluid cobalt brushwork. The composition uses negative space effectively, with soft washes and calligraphic line work typical of late Meiji export and domestic wares inspired by literati painting traditions.
The rim is finished with a double cobalt band, framing the scene, while the reverse shows a simple floral motif spaced around the cavetto and an unglazed foot rim with natural kiln wear. The painting shows confident, spontaneous brush handling rather than transfer decoration, consistent with hand-decorated workshop production of the period.
The imagery reflects Meiji-era continuity of Edo visual vocabulary—idealized rural architecture, scholar’s landscapes, and stylized pines—produced at a time when Japanese ceramics balanced tradition with growing international demand.
Condition: Overall good antique condition. Light surface wear and age-appropriate patina. Minor firing spots and kiln imperfections visible, including a small dark kiln mark near the rim. Foot rim shows expected wear from age and use. No cracks or repairs observed.
A strong example of Meiji period blue and white porcelain, suitable for display or collection.
