Antique Japanese Blue & White Porcelain Plate with Landscape and Well Scene
Japan, Meiji c1880’s
12"W x 10"D
Oval porcelain plate decorated in underglaze cobalt blue, featuring a finely rendered pastoral landscape centered on a stone well with flowing water, birds in flight and perched, and flowering plants including chrysanthemum forms. The interior scene is framed by a narrow patterned cartouche, surrounded by a wide geometric diaper border filled with repeated radiating motifs.
The painting shows confident brushwork with layered washes and line detailing, particularly in the foliage, water movement, and architectural elements of the well structure. The composition balances open space with dense ornamentation, a hallmark of decorative export-era Japanese porcelain.
The reverse displays double concentric foot rings with kiln grit and firing residue consistent with age. Additional painted motifs appear on the underside rim. No maker’s mark is present. Glaze shows natural pooling and unevenness typical of period production.
Condition consistent with age and use. Visible kiln grit and staining to the foot ring, minor surface wear, and light glaze irregularities. No cracks detected; no restorations observed.
A strong example of Meiji-period blue and white porcelain combining traditional Japanese imagery with decorative patterning intended for display.
