Antique Japanese Menuki Pair – Signed Fish and Bucket Motifs
Japan, Edo period (17th–19th century)

This rare and engaging pair of menuki was intended for mounting on the hilt of a Japanese sword. The set depicts a fish in animated form and a bucket, each modeled in shakudō with gilt highlights. Both pieces bear signatures: one carefully engraved on the base of the bucket, the other on the back of the fish. Such signed menuki are less common, reflecting the pride of the artisan or workshop.

The pairing of fish and bucket reflects everyday life, with deeper symbolic resonance: fish signify abundance and perseverance, while the bucket recalls sustenance and labor, grounding the imagery in practical as well as auspicious themes. Edo-period sword fittings often drew on these familiar motifs to connect warriors with both prosperity and humility.

Condition: Wear consistent with use and age, with remaining gilt visible in relief. Both signatures are intact though softly worn.

For collectors, the signed nature of this set enhances its rarity, offering both whimsical design and a direct connection to its maker.
