This is an antique Japanese Misedansu or shop chest in two sections. Made in the late 1800's or mid Meiji era. Used by Kyoto area merchants during the booming years at the end of the 19th century. There are two display areas above and one below with four drawers on the bottom. Made throughout of Sugi wood (Japanese cedar). All four drawers run smoothly and have forged iron handles with burnt lacquer finish. Original glass panes in the bottom and middle section. Four glass sliding doors close off the cabinet areas.

Height = 66"

Width = 70"

Depth = 18"

This tansu chest is made with pegged-tenon open-mortise corner box joint construction. This chest has all its 150 year old deep rich patina. All drawers and doors move easily without binding. All hardware is hand forged iron with Gumpai style handles and detailed lock plates. Forged iron side handles aid in transporting this chest even when fully loaded with possessions.

Please contact us for details on shipping this tansu by White Glove freight service.

This chest has a century and a half old original warm aged patina and, having been used lovingly for over a century, it remains in fine original antique condition and should serve for another century of use. There are some areas of past stains and distress marks as expected from a genuine antique. A great piece of Japanese history and an interesting and very solid and functional piece of furniture.
