This is a vintage Japanese ceramic bowl known as a chawan (tea bowl) used in Japanese chado (tea ceremony). It is unique to the Oribe kilns and dates to the early-Showa Era (c. 1930's). Its deeper shape makes it more suitable for tea ceremony of the winter months as it holds its warmth longer than the lower flatter summer style.
This bowl was hand thrown, hand painted, and high fired for lasting durability. It has the signature stamp of the Oribe artist on the bottom (see pictures 7 & 8).
This chawan measures 4 1/2" in diameter by 3" tall (11.5 x 7.3 cm). Having been in storage for over 90 years, it remains in very fine condition.
