Antique Japanese Signed Suiban Bronze Ikebana Flower Vase Birds & Rabbits 17"
Antique Japanese Signed Suiban Bronze Ikebana Flower Vase Birds & Rabbits 17"
This is an antique Japanese early Meiji (c. 1870) bronze Suiban (Ikebana flower vase). Known as either a suiban or hirokuchi, it is a low flat flower arranger in the shape of a plum blossom with four lobes. This vase was used in a tokonoma (alcove in a traditional Japanese home) to display flowers. It is made of a heavy bronze and has a thick cast design of birds (plovers and rabbits). The symbol of plovers flying over water is a Japanese symbol of returning home after a long travel.
There is an artist signature on the bottom.
This vase measures 17" long by 11" wide and 5" tall (43 x 28 x 12.5 cm). Along with an aged patina, this bronze suiban remains in fine condition. Note: in the photos a possible repair on the bottom when first cast over a century ago. A nice piece of bronze artwork weighing in at over 11 pounds.
A beautiful way to display any kind of flower arrangement a great stand alone piece of bronze artwork
