Antique Japanese Tabakobon Smoking Set – Wood Body with Silver Rim & Bamboo Haifuki
Japan, late Meiji to Taishō period (c. 1900–1925)
Dimensions: approx. 7″ across
A beautifully crafted Japanese tabakobon (煙草盆) smoking set once used in the traditional kiseru pipe-smoking ritual. The circular wood body features a silver-metal alloy rim, a removable copper-lined fire bowl (hiire / 火入) for charcoal, and a bamboo haifuki (灰吹) tube that fits into the smaller opening. A folding metal carry handle completes the set, allowing this to be carried room-to-room in the home.
The haifuki tube served an important functional role in safe disposal of pipe ash. The bamboo upright inserts into the smaller circular opening of the tray and functions as a haifuki (灰吹) — a water-filled bamboo ash-blow tube used to safely dispose of used kiseru embers and ash in the smoking set.
Together, the components demonstrate the refined aesthetics and attention to ritual surrounding the act of smoking in Japanese culture, where tools were considered extensions of seasonal hospitality and personal style.
