Antique Japanese Taisho Era c1920's Kiri 5 Drawer Kodansu 37"H
This is an antique Japanese tansu known as a kodansu. this tansu chest was made and used over 100 years ago years ago in the late Meiji Era (c. 1910). The kodansu was a special personal chest and was used to store everything from letter writing accessories as well as money, documents and other valuables. This tansu chest is made of kiri (paulownia) wood case and interiors. It shows great care in the construction with hardened hinoki wood peg construction. The handles are made of hand forged copper with handles in the classic moko (melon) shape. It has all of its original deep rich patina. All drawers move easily without binding. This tansu chest has 6 drawers of various sizes to accommodate various items.
With exception to some minor signs of use it remains in fine condition and should serve well for another century of use. It measures 33" wide by 37" high by 14" deep. A great piece of Japanese history and a very interesting and functional piece of furniture.
