Antique Japanese Taisho Era Round Lacquer Bento Lidded Lunch Box Signed 9"
Antique Japanese Taisho Era Round Lacquer Bento Lidded Lunch Box Signed 9"
This is an antique (c. 1920) Taisho era Japanese lidded lacquer bento box or lunch container. It came from a full set of ten such lidded containers all set into a lidded storage (transporting) box (see last picture). This listing is for one of the round lidded containers. Each one has its own removable black lacquered wooden dividers (see picture 6 & 9). It is all hand turned cryptomeria wood with over 20 thin coats of Japanese urushi red exterior and black interior lacquer. Because of a little warping the lid rocks a bit on the base. It is signed by the maker on the inside of the lid. The craftsmanship of this container is something seldom seen today. It has a bent wood round exterior with woven wood end fastener (see picture 2). Having been in storage for most of the past century, and never used this lidded container remains in good polish and in fine condition. It measures 9" in diameter by 2 1/4" tall (23 x 6 cm).
