An exceptional example of Japanese lacquer artistry, this hexagonal legged box features a brilliant vermilion (shu-urushi) ground adorned with an elegant maki-e design of botan (peony) and susuki (autumn grasses) in raised gold and fine hiramaki-e detailing. The composition flows organically across the six facets of the box, harmonizing delicate trailing vines and clusters of blossoms rendered in luminous powdered gold with subtle flecks of nashiji.

The lid lifts to reveal a smooth interior finished in matching vermilion lacquer. The form, with its slightly elevated tripod-style legs, suggests a food presentation box (jubako) used in formal tea gatherings or kazaridana display. The golden leaves and vines are executed with refined brush control and restrained asymmetry.

A small area of age-appropriate surface wear and a minor split at one joint, otherwise in excellent condition with high gloss and remarkable preservation of the gold work. Lid has a slight wobble when in place.
