This is an antique Japanese late Meiji Era (c. 1910) lacquer sakazuki (sake cup) made of hand turned cryptomeria wood with over twenty layers of red lacquer. It has makie (raised gold artwork) depicting the famous kiri mon (family crest). Japanese lacquer from the Meiji era was considered the finest ever made. It is durable enough to withstand the harshest treatment the centuries have thrown at it.

Having been in storage for over a century , with exception to some minor chips in the lacquer at the base (see picture 10), this sakazuki remains in very fine condition throughout and is in good polish. Measures 5 1/2" in diameter by 2" tall (14 x 5 cm).
