Japanese Imperial Government 50 Sen banknote, Mount Fuji and cherry blossom design, Showa 13 (1938), domestic wartime currency

Japan; issued Showa 13, 1938

A Japanese domestic government note (政府紙幣, seifu shihei) for 50 Sen (五拾銭), issued in Showa 13 — 1938 — as Japan's wartime economy placed increasing pressure on the metal supply and paper currency progressively replaced coinage in everyday circulation. The face presents a richly engraved composition of Mount Fuji rising through clouds with radiating sunburst behind, framed by cherry blossom sprays — the defining icons of the Japanese nation — printed in multicolor with a red seal of the Finance Ministry (大蔵省) at left. The serial number 1372 appears in red. The reverse is printed in olive green with 五拾銭 (50 Sen) in large characters within a decorative guilloche border. Issued by the Cabinet Printing Bureau (内閣印刷局製造).
