Antique Meiji Era Japanese Samurai Warrior Doll Wooden Gofun Face Full Armor
This is a late Edo or Meiji Era (c. 1850) antique Japanese Samurai warrior doll done in a soft sculpture with silk kimonos over a firm base. He has a wooden head and gofun (crushed oyster shell) finished face along with carved wooden hands. He represents a Commander of a Samurai General or Shogun. He is sitting in a full lotus position (with soles of the feet pointed up. with head turned downward in reverence to his shogun master. He is holding a battle fan which would have been used to signal his troops at a distance. The full set of armor is very realistically detailed.
Check the detail work on his feet (pictures 7 & 11) as well as the metal chain male woven to the left sleeve (pictures 3 & 12).
Having been in storage for over 150 years, with the exception of minor signs of past use, he remains in very good condition. In kneeling position he measures about 9" tall by 7" wide (23 x 18 cm).
