Antique Taisho Era C1920 Japanese Carved Wood Fish Obon Ozen Sushi Plater
Antique Taisho Era C1920 Japanese Carved Wood Fish Obon Ozen Sushi Plater
This is a 100 year old antique Japanese Taisho era (c.1920) sushi plater made of carved cryptomeria wood and lacquered in red and black. It is in the round shape of a large red snapper. The carving is skillfully crafted followed by several coats of red then black lacquer to highlight the carved areas. The back is all black lacquer with the name of the sushi shop hand painted in red with a phone number (see picture 6) that is just 6 digits indicating an early number of the Taisho era or earlier.
Other than a slight warp to the plater (see pictures) it is in very good condition. Measuring 13" in diameter by 1" thick (33 x 2.6 cm).
It is water prof and can be hand washed. It would still make a great serving plater for your next sushi gathering!
