Japanese Government occupation currency, Dutch East Indies (Indonesia) 10 Cent — "De Japansche Regeering Tien Cent," issued 1942
Japanese Occupation, Dutch East Indies (Indonesia); issued 1942
A Japanese military occupation banknote for 10 Cent issued for the Dutch East Indies (present-day Indonesia) during the Japanese occupation of 1942–1945. The face reads DE JAPANSCHE REGEERING / TIEN CENT — "The Japanese Government / Ten Cents" — in Dutch, the colonial language of the territory, with decorative guilloche border and 大日本帝國政府 (Imperial Japanese Government) in small characters at the base. The reverse carries a bold geometric 10 in purple guilloche. These notes were issued by the Japanese military administration to replace Dutch colonial currency as Japan rapidly occupied the resource-rich Dutch East Indies following the fall of Singapore in February 1942 — the territory's oil fields, rubber plantations, and raw materials being among the primary strategic objectives of Japan's southward advance.
