Japanese Government occupation currency, Burma 1/4 Rupee — "The Japanese Government 1/4 Rupee," BG block, issued 1942
Japanese Occupation, Burma (Myanmar); issued 1942
A Japanese military occupation banknote for 1/4 Rupee issued for Burma (present-day Myanmar) during the Japanese occupation of 1942–1945, bearing the BG (Burma/Bengal) block letter designation in red. The face reads THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT / BG 1/4 RUPEE BG on a cream ground with decorative guilloche border and 大日本帝國政府 at the base. The reverse carries a 1/4 in blue guilloche. Japan occupied Burma in May 1942 following a rapid campaign that pushed British forces back into India, and issued occupation currency in rupee denominations — the existing monetary unit of British Burma — to integrate the territory into the Japanese-controlled Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere. The BG block designation is associated with the Burmese issue; some scholars also associate BG with Bengal, where these notes also circulated near the front lines of the India-Burma theater.
