Japanese Government occupation currency, Philippines 50 Centavos — "The Japanese Government Fifty Centavos," PI block, issued 1942
Japanese Occupation, Philippines; issued 1942
A Japanese military occupation banknote for 50 Centavos issued for the Philippines during the Japanese occupation of 1942–1945, bearing the PI (Philippines) block letter designation in red. The face reads THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT / FIFTY CENTAVOS with a vignette of a tropical plantation scene — palm trees and agricultural workers — at right, printed in dark navy on cream paper. The PI designation identifies this as a Philippine Islands issue, distinguished from notes issued for other occupied territories. Japan issued occupation currency across its entire Pacific and Southeast Asian sphere — the Philippines, Dutch East Indies, Burma, Malaya, and elsewhere — replacing existing colonial currencies with notes backed by nothing more than military authority, and often referred to disparagingly by locals as "Mickey Mouse money."
