Chinese Blue and White Porcelain Covered Jar Interlocking Lotus Scroll Qing 11H
China, Qing Dynasty, 19th century
Approx. 11 in. H × 9 in. dia (28 × 23 cm); Weight:
A substantial Chinese blue-and-white porcelain covered jar (罐, guàn) of the Qing Dynasty, painted overall in cobalt underglaze with a dense interlocking lotus scroll (缠枝莲, chán zhī lián) — one of the most enduring decorative programs in Chinese ceramic history, traceable to the imperial kilns of the Yuan and Ming dynasties. The continuous vine composition covers every surface without interruption, the curling tendrils and tri-lobed leaf forms resolving at intervals into large peony and lotus blooms rendered in graduated cobalt wash, their petals carefully detailed against the bright white glaze ground. The pattern extends across the domed lid, which is centered with a boldly glazed cobalt teardrop finial — a strong visual anchor for the composition. The wide-shouldered globular body narrows to a wide flat mouth with an unglazed rim seat; the unglazed sandy biscuit foot ring is characteristic of Jingdezhen commercial production of the period. No reign mark; the base is plain unglazed porcelain paste. Scattered iron spot inclusions appear on the shoulder — intrinsic to the paste composition and consistent with authentic period production.
Condition: Good overall; glaze bright and intact. Iron spot inclusions on shoulder are period-authentic, not damage. Minor wear to foot rim. Lid fits well.
A handsome and generously scaled Qing storage jar in a classic and highly collectible pattern — the dense chán zhī lián scroll and cobalt finial give this piece strong visual presence in any setting.
