Chinese Cloisonne Enamel Brush Pot Cylinder Vase Blue Ground Scholar Objects Panel

Cloisonné Enamel Brush Pot / Bitong / Jingtailan / Blue Ground Scholar's Objects

China, late Qing–early Republic, 19th–early 20th century

A cylindrical cloisonné brush pot (bitong) on a rich cobalt blue ground, one face decorated with a shaped cartouche enclosing a scholar's objects composition — a red-ground vase with floral decoration, a potted plant, and a stack of books or folded documents — all rendered in polychrome enamel. The reverse carries a geometric lattice pattern on the same blue ground. Upper and lower borders feature alternating heart and arrow motifs in turquoise and gold. Brass mounts top and bottom; glazed blue enamel base.

Dimensions: 7.25"H (18 cm) by 3.25" diameter; Weight: 3 lbs 1.3oz

Scholar's objects (bogu) compositions — depicting the paraphernalia of the cultivated gentleman's studio — are a recurring theme in Chinese decorative arts from the Qing period onward, lending this piece both decorative and iconographic interest.

Condition: Very good; no significant enamel losses noted.
