Famille Noire Porcelain Covered Ginger Jar / Tsubo / Shishi Foo Dog and Peony
China, Republic Period, early 20th century
A large and visually striking covered ginger jar in the famille noire tradition, enameled in polychrome on a dense black ground. The ovoid body is decorated with two molded and painted shishi (foo dogs) — one golden-green, one brown-gray — cavorting among an all-over field of peonies, chrysanthemums, and asters in turquoise, pink, lavender, and white, with ruyi cloud scrolls throughout. A band of upright lotus petals in turquoise and yellow encircles the base; the shoulder and lid carry a geometric diaper border in blue and pink on white. The domed lid repeats the black-ground floral composition. Glazed base with unglazed foot rim; no reign mark.
Dimensions: approximately 10"H with lid (25 cm) Weight:
Famille noire — characterized by its rich black enamel ground and vivid polychrome overglaze palette — was revived with great commercial success during the late Qing and Republic periods, producing bold decorative wares for both domestic and export markets. This jar presents well as a standalone decorative object or as part of a chinoiserie interior.
Condition: Very good; lid present. Wear and grime to foot rim consistent with age. No chips or cracks noted.
